Catholic Human Services is currently recruiting for a full-time MDHHS Certified Peer Recovery Coach to serve individuals with substance use disorders who are involved with the criminal justice system in Wexford and Missaukee Counties.
 
This position is specifically designed to support underserved and vulnerable populations who are incarcerated in county jails and transitioning back into the community. The Peer Recovery Coach will provide recovery support services, care coordination, release planning, and post-release recovery support to individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring needs.
Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, the Peer Recovery Coach will collaborate with jail staff, community corrections, behavioral health providers, treatment agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations to improve access to treatment, recovery resources, housing, employment services, and other essential supports that promote successful community reintegration and sustained recovery.
 
Position Summary
The Peer Recovery Coach utilizes lived experience, recovery expertise, and evidence-based peer support practices to engage individuals before release from incarceration and continue support throughout the reentry process. The coach serves as a mentor, advocate, and navigator, helping individuals identify recovery goals, overcome barriers to care, and establish connections to long-term recovery supports.
 
Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide peer recovery coaching and recovery support services to incarcerated individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Conduct outreach and engagement within county jail settings to identify individuals who may benefit from recovery support services.
  • Assist individuals in developing person-centered recovery and reentry plans prior to release.
  • Coordinate care and facilitate warm handoffs to treatment providers, behavioral health services, primary care providers, and community support agencies.
  • Support individuals considering or currently engaged in Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and assist with continuity of care upon release.
  • Connect participants with recovery housing, transportation resources, employment services, educational opportunities, and other social supports.
  • Assist individuals in accessing health insurance, identification documents, benefits, and other resources necessary for successful community reintegration.
  • Provide post-release follow-up and ongoing recovery support to reduce barriers, strengthen recovery capital, and decrease the likelihood of relapse and recidivism.
  • Facilitate referrals to substance use treatment, mental health services, recovery community organizations, mutual aid groups, and other community-based supports.
  • Promote self-advocacy, wellness, resilience, and recovery-oriented systems of care.
  • Document services and maintain accurate records in accordance with agency, state, and funding requirements.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborate with community partners to ensure coordinated care.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while utilizing lived experience to inspire hope and recovery.
Desired Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of substance use disorders, recovery principles, harm reduction practices, and recovery-oriented systems of care.
  • Understanding of the unique challenges faced by justice-involved individuals and those transitioning from incarceration to community living.
  • Familiarity with community resources, housing programs, treatment services, and recovery support networks within Wexford and Missaukee Counties.
  • Strong communication, advocacy, engagement, and motivational interviewing skills.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with diverse populations and individuals experiencing multiple barriers to recovery.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
Required Qualifications
  • MDHHS Certified Peer Recovery Coach certification.
  • CCAR Recovery Coach certification.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Experience navigating recovery support systems and community resources preferred.
Lived Experience Requirement
The ideal candidate will have lived experience in recovery from substance use disorders and a passion for helping others achieve and sustain recovery. Applicants with a personal history of substance use disorder should have a minimum of two years of sustained recovery.
